Big band wedding

The nineteen-piece Ted Knight Big Band played for a November 2007 wedding for a couple from Washington, DC at Saddlebrook Resort near Tampa. The bride and groom chose a mix that included uptempo Basie swing, jazz from Miles Davis and Thelonius Monk, and soul from Otis Redding and Diana Ross.

Vocalists Evelyn Russell, Tom Willis and Kenny Seabrook made the trip from southeast Florida with Ted and several key players. Tampa-area musicians on the date included David Pate on tenor sax, Herb Bruce on trombone, and drummer Jean Bolduc. Lead alto saxophonist Simon Hutchings traveled from Palm Coast (near Daytona Beach) to play the gig.

A word from Ted

"Back in the 70s, I started playing piano for house parties while studying music in college. I formed a trio to play for a wedding, and before long we had several bands going. I loved every minute of it.

"I learned a lot from my late father, Vic Knight, and enjoyed playing with his big band and his jazz groups. Dad was generous with help and advice, and he was proud to see me go out on my own.

"I'm also lucky to have the support of my wife, Marie, who does a terrific job of managing the business. Marie's attention to detail leaves me free to concentrate on making the best music I can. By the way, Marie is the one who came up with the name of our business, A Little Knight Music. This is the best job in the world. I love what I do, and I have a lot of fun doing it."
